While I have the usual FAQs on my website, there’s a lot of smaller, specific questions about sessions that I regularly get asked. In this blog, we’re going to dive into some of the questions and concerns that a lot of clients ask about therapy sessions with me.
Is it OK if I swear in session?
As long as it isn’t at me, I could not care less.
I’m in a flare. Can I attend therapy from bed?
Flareups are a challenging and common part of chronic illness. Many of my clients find attending from bed or in a nest on the couch to be a way to still receive support without worsening their symptoms. Whatever helps support you to show up is welcome and encouraged by me! So grab your heating pad, where your comfiest clothes (appropriate PJs are also fine!), and get cozy. I’m just glad you’re here.
Are you going to make me talk about my childhood? I’d rather not.
The short answer is that your therapist shouldn’t make you talk about anything. We don’t have to talk about your childhood if you don’t want to. In fact, the idea that therapy sessions are always a deep dive into your childhood and your parents is a bit of a myth. However, if it seems like your current challenges are rooted in experiences or issues from your past, I may gently encourage us to explore this. As the client, though, you always have the control about what we do and do not focus on in your therapy. My job as your therapist is to meet you where you are, take your lead, and collaborate with you.
Do you mind if I eat?
Not at all! If you’re able to eat and focus on our session, by all means. Because I offer lunchtime therapy appointments, I’m definitely used to folks eating a meal or a snack during our time together. I also always have a water bottle with me, and usually have either a tea or a fun beverage with me. I encourage you to stay hydrated and get comfortable! The only thing I do mind you consuming during our sessions is alcohol or recreational drugs.
Can I ask you a personal question?
Absolutely. I can’t promise that I’ll always be able to answer, but I never mind you asking! If I’m able to answer, I will.
Can I see your pets?
Absolutely you can!
We recently adopted a two-year-old rescue corgi named Gem. So far, she’s proving quiet and calm enough to be in the office with me during most of my therapy sessions with clients. If she isn’t, or she’s hiding under the chair (her current spot as she gets comfortable), I’m happy to show you a picture or two.
Sadly, my cat Pandora isn’t well-behaved enough to be in my office during our sessions, as she doesn’t understand the concept of sharing my attention with others. But I’m more than happy to show you a picture!
Do you want to see my pets?
PLEASE. The answer is always yes. Being able to meet your cats, dogs, guinea pigs, lizards (and even a snake once!) is one of the highlights of being a virtual therapist. So, please, never apologize if your cat walks in front of your computer or your dog hops up onto your lap.
